History of Skiatook
Skiatook was established in 1872 when a Cherokee Chief by the name of William Rogers built a trading post in the area. An Osage man named Skiatooka was a frequent visitor to the post, and many people think that this is why the town was named Skiatook. However, others think that it was named after the Cherokee phrase ski a took, which means a large tract of land.
As more people settled in Skiatook, several businesses were built in the area including a grocery store, post office, bank, a church and several schools. After the railroad was built through the town, many permanent roads, sidewalks and bridges were constructed.
The city became incorporated in 1905, and today's owners of Skiatook properties have access to a large array of large and small businesses.
